There's a First Time For Everything

It’s hard to believe that only a few months ago I took a test as a joke and found out that our lives would change forever. It’s been a whirlwind 8 months, but I really don’t know that I’d change a thing…except for the past week.
This pregnancy held so many exciting firsts for us…our first vacation since our honeymoon (it legitimately took us nearly 4 years to take one…that won’t happen again!)

We bought our first house and renovated it.

We’ve been prepping for this sweet baby…the list goes on and on.

And then there was the one bad “first” that we never expected. A little over a week ago, Bobby was blindsided at the very end of a training ride by a car that hit him 100 meters away from our house. It was awful. He was only 3 hours away from leaving for the US Pro National Championships. He had 3 other HUGE races ahead of him before the baby’s due date. Instead of becoming the National Champion…he had to have surgery and is in the process of a long, very painful recovery.
And we’re discovering firsts we never thought we’d have to experience. Never did I think that I’d be a caretaker after Bobby’s cancer treatment, especially at nine months pregnant. It’s been the hardest week of our life together, physically and emotionally. We’re beyond grateful for the kindness of friends who brought dinner on nights when (they had no idea, but) I felt like I couldn’t go on, acquaintances who have offered support, and family who have managed to help us from 600 miles away.
Now, however, we’re going to take on another first, because this little girl could come today or in two weeks! It’s hard to believe we’ll meet her before long. I am heartbroken that Bobby can’t take part in so many things over the next few weeks (including holding his daughter), and I know we’ll have a heck of a journey with a one-armed Dad and a Mom who will have just given birth, but like we have for the last four years….we’ll take each first as it comes.
…maybe we can train the dog to change diapers.

…maybe not.

Lindsay Sweeting was in the world of Marketing and Publicity in her previous life. These days you're more likely to see her running after her toddler than running a meeting, but she does her best to find time to create new recipes, come up with fun activities for her daughter, and write about the craziness that is life in the Sweeting house.
